Relief Society Celebrates 175 Years

The celebration of the Relief Society’s 175th birthday on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 was a delightful combination of good company, good food and a beautifully spiritual program around the theme of “Women at the Well.”

The program, written by award-winning songwriter, producer and performer Kenneth Cope, reminded the large gathering of sisters of the B7 Ward Relief Society “to drink and never thirst…many women…followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him’ (Matthew 27: 55, emphasis added). They knew He was the Well from which sprang “living water.” He was that Bread which came down from heaven: not as their fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and were dead, but they who would eat of the bread He offered would live forever. (See John 6: 58.)”

In the dry and dusty deserts of Israel, wells were not only the source of water in the community, they represented life to the community. Where there was no water, there was no life. And so it is with Christ. God has made Him the source of life for us.

Narrators were Wendy Johnston, Robin Walden, Susie Long and Trudy Oviatt with solo and trio performances by Lauretta Swansborough (“Women at the Well”), Maureen Taylor (“Close Enough to Touch”), Meg Fraser (“Daughter Arise”), Aubrey Van Wagoner and daughters Kara and Laura Brown (“If Thou Had Been There”), Katie Christensen (“Miracles from Heaven”) and Janet Johnson (“Greater Love”).

The light dinner included waldorf salad, a coconut cake and fruits, cheeses, olives and meats from the Mediterranean!

Special thanks to Bonnie Sorenson, Activities Chair; Lauretta Swansborough, program director; Elaine Christensen; Food Committee Chair; and, Ilaina Carter and Roena Soliai for decorations, invitations and posters.

It was a beautiful evening where the sisters enjoyed both a physical and spiritual feast!
